Red Barrels has confirmed this week that survival-horror title Outlast will be released for PC through Steam as of 04 September 2013. The scary-looking game will available through Valve’s service for $19.99.
Outlast is set in the remote mountains of Colorado and all manner of horrors await players in the Mount Massive Asylum, a long-abandoned home for the mentally ill. Recently reopened by the ‘research and charity’ wing of the transitional Murkoff Corporation, it been has operating in strict secrecy until now (scary stuff). Acting on a tip from an inside source, journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility and what he discovers is a terrifying mix of science, religion and nature; his only escape is to find the truth at the centre of all of this.
The gameplay looks like it will put you on the edge of your seat. The mutated ex-patients are relentless and won’t stop until they get their hands on you, even going so far as to chase you as fast as they can through the cramped corridors of the asylum. Another terrifying element is the use of an infrared camera when its dark, making it feel like a found-footage horror movie – massive potential for jump-out-of-your-skin moments.
The team at Red Barrels had lots to be happy about in June this year, when Sony revealed at their E3 conference that Outlast will be coming to the PlayStation 4 although no release date has been set yet. The great news kept on coming when the title was nominated for the ‘Best Downloadable’ category of E3’s Game Critics Awards.
Outlast is shaping up to be a genuinely scary thriller of a game and it’s bound to be very successful when it hits Steam. It will no doubt be one of those under-the-radar releases on the PS4 but once word spreads, we’re sure it will get a strong following and be recognised as one of the best horror titles of modern times.
