During our usual search through Kickstarter, we came across a project that instantly caught our eye. Among the Sleep is a horror-adventure game where the surreal nature of a child’s dream is mixed with their unique perspective and imagination – with a couple of interesting twists thrown in for good measure.
Among the Sleep’s protagonist is a two-year-old child, who is exploring different environments while crawling on their hands and knees. Getting rid of the ghosts and ghouls therefore isn’t as simple as fighting them off with some kind of weapon; running and hiding is the only way of avoiding these paranormal entities.
The story begins with you waking up in your cot in the middle of a thunder storm, with no lights on and no parents to speak of. You somehow climb out of your high-sided bed and start crawling around the house before a feeling of not-being-entirely-alone sets in. Moving shadows and strange noises become more and more frequent and this builds the suspense and tension beautifully, setting the tone for the rest of your adventure.
The eleven individuals behind this project are a team called Krillbite Studio based in Hamar, Norway. They formed during their studies of interactive digital art two years ago and began working on Among the Sleep for their thesis project, and set up the studio after graduation to continue to develop the concept.
Krillbite need $200,000 for their Kickstarter project to be successful – and for them to be able to give up their day-jobs to work on Among the Sleep full-time. The deadline is 18 May 2013 and with full funding this horror-adventure should be with us in December 2013. All of our fingers and toes are crossed for the developer to succeed, because original concepts like this don’t come along every day.
