We told you we we’ve been busy playing horror games. This time around it’s my turn in the Scare-Up spotlight taking a recently released horror game for a creepy spin: The Evil Within by Tango Gameworks and the mind behind Resident Evil, Shinji Mikami.
The Evil Within aims to revive the survival-horror genre by returning us to its roots. It puts players in the shoes of Detective Sebastian Castellanos from the Krimson City Police Department. Alongside his partner Joseph and Junior Detective Kidman, they respond to a distress call from the nearby Beacon Hill Mental Hospital only to find everyone inside dead. After a very short investigation the character finds himself hanging from his feet like a side of beef in a meat locker and must escape from a masked maniac holding a chainsaw, only to find himself in a hellish world filled with cannibalistic creatures. Castellanos has to defend himself with anything available as resources are scarce and there are hundreds of these creatures.
Since this is a very new game and as a departure from our usual style, I didn’t record myself playing it and in fact offer no comment whatsoever. We figured it was best to do it this way so my reactions or lack thereof don’t affect your own view of the game. As Phil put it when I was about to record: “No screaming at the scary bits!”
You can find The Evil Within currently on Steam for £34.99 if you weren’t already scared enough after this year’s Halloween.
